Discovering the island of Calypso

While making plans on this beautiful (google) island
It is good to have ......
.....a reminder of its long history.
In winter only about 40 people stay on Gavdos, some of them never left it.
To meet them in their genuine way of living, WALKING is the ultimate experience.

Take your pick

1. Korfos beach
2. Nearby
3. To Vatsiana
4. To Sarakiniko
5. To Tripiti

1. Korfos beach
swimming ????? yes !!!!! and fishing
Something extra
From the port to Korfos beach, or Vice Versa
Follow the seashore and discover rocks of all shapes and colours.
Good tip: take a walking stick. About halfway, take a moment of peaceful meditation in a beautiful little church,
Αφιες Πατέρες (the old Fathers).

2. Nearby

Walk through the dry river bed, and look at the powerful roots of old trees.
It leads you to the beautiful church Ag. Giorgos.
While looking around in the old ruins, you can hear the running water at the source.
In one of those houses Georgos of the taverna lived with his parents.
They were tough and courageous farmers, growing grain for the animals.
The remains of the treshing floor are still intact. Follow the pathe to the church .
A little Challenge ?

Follow the path to the church. Cross the dry river and climb up the stairs.
You can fill up your empty bottle with clear water, take your time.
When you have the old house on your left side, take the upgoing path to the right.
Follow, with the help of some trolls, via orientation, the 'path' up hill.
After some time you will see the backside of the beautiful church of Metochi.
Success !!!

3. To Vatsiana

A few families still live there in houses built years before.
Also the papas of the island lives here with his wife Maria.

Your choice ?

3.1 A slowly ascending footpath brings you to a village on a plateau close to the Western border.

3.2 An old restored path, via Metochi (1h30 )

On the road to the port, go left direction Metochi,
Take the old and beautiful path after +/- 1km on the old road to Kastri, on the left side,
You reach Vatsiana, close to the local church Ag. Haralampos.
Take a break in TRIPITI καφενείο.

4. Sarakiniko

Take the road direction Karave. Where the road to Metochi goes left,
a nice path starts in the corner (open the gate).
It leads to Ag.Panagia .
Cross that road (Karave to Kastri) and take the next path at Ag. Christos.
A short climb and a left turn leads to buildings (univ. of Crete).
Follow the goat path at the back between old cedar trees .
Along the way you will find ruins, including an olive oil factory
At the big parking place you cross the road from Karave to Ag.Ioannis.

5. Tripiti. (1h15)

A walk along the coast with wonderful views and old trees of all kinds.
Giorgos spent the first years of his life in one of the houses, now ruins.
A saltlake and a long beach with sand and pebbles.
Easter 2015, 180 refugees shipwrecked. The boat is a sad reminder.
The Southern most point of Europe is marked by a huge chair on a majestic arch like rock

κάτσε κάτω !

5b. Where Trolls can lead you.

>> After about 500 m. you find at the RIGHT side trolls leading to a Roman Grave.
>> Shortly after crossing a small gorge you will find at the LEFT side trolls leading to Lakoudi.
Follow them and admire the bushes, the flowers and a wonderful stone-made mandala.
Cross a road and continue following the trolls, down to the beach.
Alternative: follow that road to the LEFT, you reach a steep cliff whith the foundations for an Apollo Temple.
From there you can descend to the beach. One condition: NO vertigo!
The likelihood that you're alone at Lakoudi is surprisingly high.
A suggestion: Schopenhauer called it "The better consciousness." !
